St. Alban the Martyr

Compline for a Time of Pestilence

As the sun sets and the darkness closes round us
May we have faith in tomorrow’s sun rise
In the midst of this epidemic
May we look with hope to a new dawn of life.

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my Spirit
Into your hands O Lord I commend my Spirit
For you bring healing and hope.
I commend my spirit
Glory to God, Father Son and Holy SpiritSource of all life and health.
Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my Spirit

Psalm 130

Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;* Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive* to my cry for mercy.

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,* Lord, who could stand?

But with you there is forgiveness,* so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,* and in his word I put my hope.

I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning,* more than watchmen wait for the morning.

Israel, put your hope in the Lord,* for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption.

He himself will redeem Israel* from all their sins.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
Source of all life and health.

Reading

In him was life and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it.

John 1.4,5

Keep me as the apple of your eye
Hide me under the shadows of your wings.

Save us, O Lord, from all pestilence while waking,
and protect us from disease while sleeping,

that awake we may watch with Christ
and asleep may rest in peace.

Lord, you let your servant go in peace: * your word has been fulfilled.

My own eyes have seen the salvation * which you have prepared in the sight of every people;

A light to reveal you to the nations * and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to God, Father Son and Holy Spirit
Source of all life and health.

Save us, O Lord, from all pestilence while waking,
and protect us from disease while sleeping,

that awake we may watch with Christ
and asleep may rest in peace.

Circle us, Lord, in your love,
Keep Love in, keep hatred out,
Keep health in, keep disease out,
Keep courage in, keep fear out,
Keep togetherness in, keep loneliness out.

May God the Father stand in the circle with us,
May God the Son stand in the circle with us,
May God the Holy Spirit stand in the circle with us,
Now and forever.
Amen.

The Lord bless you and watch over you;
the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord look kindly on you and give you peace.
Amen.
