St. Alban the Martyr

Join St Alban's Choir

24 Oct 2016 • General news

We sing in a most beautiful, resonant building, perfect for music, and we are looking for singers in all parts, (Soprano / Treble, Alto / Countertenor, Tenor, and Bass) to enable us to continue to develop our tradition and help us to introduce more challenging repertoire.

Repertoire

We sing:

Plainsong Propers (every Sunday and Festival days)

Mass settings:

  • Plainsong
  • Renaissance (Palstrina, Victoria, Hassler, etc.)
  • Classical (Haydn, Mozart, etc.)
  • Traditional Anglican (Harwood, Darke, etc.)

Motets:

  • From the Traditional repertoire of the Western Church, from ancient to modern.

Choir rehearsal times are:

  • Fridays 7.30 to 9.00 p.m.
  • Sundays 9.30 a.m. before the 10.00 a.m. Mass

Organs

Saint Alban's Church is fortunate to have a well-maintained three-manual Rushworth and Dreaper pipe organ.

It also has an early 19th century single-manual, manually blown, mechanical action chamber organ on a mobile platform.

We offer an Organ Scholarship (currently £500) annually, and also encourage self-funding scholars.

Tuition is available in most aspects of organ playing from both the Director of Music and the Assistant Organist.

Please contact us for details.

Orchestra

On special occasions and Festivals we often sing a Mass setting with instrumental accompaniment (usually two violins, 'cello and 'bass).

We would like to do this more regularly, and also perform large scale settings with a larger orchestra.

We would also encourage the use of instrumental music within the liturgy generally.
