St. Alban the Martyr

HLF (GPW) Development Grant Awarded

6 Dec 2017 • General news

St Alban's PCC has been awarded a development grant of up to £28,000 under the Heritage Lottery Fund (Grants for Places of Worship) scheme. This represents the first-round of our application for up to £250,000 towards the estimated cost of £560,853 of renewing the church roof, other high-level repairs and other work to improve access to the building and make its interior and heritage more accessible to the public under the project title "Revealing St Albans Hidden Heritage". The grant will enable us to prepare detailed plans for the roof renewal and high level repairs to widows and stonework and for improved step-free acces through the main west entrance of the church with minimal impact on the historic appearance of the building. It will also allow us to crystallize our ideas for making the interior of the church visible even when it is not open to visitors and for new materials to publicise and interpret the history of the church, the artefacts that it holds and the history of the parish.

The largest part of the work financially will be completing the renewal of the church roof in order to protect the interior. The areas of the of the roof shown in dark grey in the plan below require renewal; those in light grey were renewed in 2016, with the aid of a grant of £85k from the Heritage Lottery Fund Listed Places of Worship: Roof Repair Fund:
