An Evening of American Art Song

7.00 p.m. Saturday October 28th 2017

Jeanne Conard Jones, Mezzo-Soprano

John Jenkin, Piano

Saint Alban's, Highgate, is happy to present a recital of American Art Songs, including songs by Samuel Barber, Stephen Foster, Leonard Bernstein, Ernest Gold, William Schuman, and Cole Porter, and concluding with a selection of African American Spirituals.

Jeanne Conard Jones recently arrived in Birmingham after making her career as a singer, teacher and conductor in Germany.

She is accompanied by John Jenkin, a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and LRAM and ARCM diplomas for pianoforte, specialising in vocal accompaniment.

Jeanne and John intend to illustrate the idea that some songs we may not think of as coming under the hallowed banner of "Art Song" can fulfil all the requirements of proper Kunstlieder. She shares morsels of information that help to illuminate this idea, or are simply interesting facts about the songs, the composers, and the musical life of the time.

The recital takes place at Saint Alban's Church, Conybere Street, B12 0YF, a building of architectural interest having many cathedral-like features, being the only parish church in the Birmingham Diocese with a stone vaulted roof and renowned for its marvellous acoustic.

Free Admission — Optional Retiring Collection.

Tea and Coffee Available in the Interval.
