Phase II Roof Renewal — September 2020

By the 1st of September, the first tiles had been added to the west side of the north transept roof.

A week later the north side of the nave roof was showing good progress, with the ridge tiles in place for half the length of the nave.

The east side of the north transept roof was being tiled.

The chancel roof was ready for tiling as far as the curve of the apse, which was yet to be stripped of the old tiles.

Meanwhile some repairs to the stonework of the west end of the church had been carried out, including pinning a crack by the west door.

By the end of the week both sides of the north transept roof were complete apart from the ridge tiles.

Tiles had been stacked ready on the north side of the chancel roof. But the south side of the chancel and the curved roof of the apse has not yet been stripped of the old tiles.

On the 18th of September the nave roof was complete and the north side of the chancel roof had been tiled as far as the curve of the apse, which had been stripped of the old tiles.

The east half of the south side of the chancel roof was being covered with roofing felt, while the west half still had the old tiles. The old battens and the plaster 'torching' which had secured the tiles were being removed from the boards which form the curve of the apse.

On the 23rd September the boards had been cleared of battens and debris and covered with roofing felt.

The next day tiles were being fixed on the south side of the chancel roof.
