St. Alban the Martyr

Holy Cross Day Mass

14 Sep 2025 10:00AM — 11:30AM

We keep Holy Cross Day, the anniversary of  the opening of St Alban's first Mission Chapel in 1865 on Leopold Street as our Dedication Festival.

This year we will use this opportunity to remember past benefactors to give thanks for our the life of our friend John Henry Jenkin MA (Cantab) FRCO LRAM ARCM (30 November 1940 – 30 June 2025).  When a new incumbent decided that traditional church music was no longer needed in the church near his home, John found a sympathetic home at St Alban's in 2015.

Until recently, he remained our voluntary assistant organist, regularly driving 40 miles each way from his home to play for us. He educated and trained many musicians and organists, including our own past organ scholar George Nicholls. His knowledge, skill and impish wit are sorely missed.

The Mass setting will be Haydn’s Little Organ Mass, one of John's favourites. Our former Director of Music Aled Liddington will return to play the organ while our current Director of Music Angela Sones will direct an augmented choir.

The doors will open for the congregation at 9:30 a.m. and there will be refreshments in our hall following the service.
