St. Alban the Martyr

St Michael Defeats the Dragon

This page is part of our project "Revealing St Alban's Hidden Heritage" supported by a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to players of The National Lottery.

In this panel we see not St George, but Archangel Michael, who carried the same device on his shield but also has wings. He is defeating Satan, in the form of a Dragon (“that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan”), and casting him out from heaven.

The text on the scroll held by the angel beneath this scene is "Revelation XII 7-8" which reads "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven."

If you have not already done so, now look at the upper left panel in which Melchizedek blesses Abram.
