St. Alban the Martyr

A Vision Calls Patrick to Return to Ireland

This page is part of our project "Revealing St Alban's Hidden Heritage" supported by a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to players of The National Lottery.

One night a few years after he had returned home to Britain Patrick had a vision in which he was handed a letter headed "The Voice of the Irish" and, as he began to read it, he heard the voice of people near the west coast of Ireland appealing to him to return to them. Here we see the children of Ireland calling to the sleeping Patrick across the water. The quotation from Psalm seventeen is a contraction of “Thou hast visited me in the night”.
