St. Alban the Martyr

The Burial of St Patrick

This page is part of our project "Revealing St Alban's Hidden Heritage" supported by a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to players of The National Lottery.

The top right panel depicts the burial of St Patrick, who has been placed in an ornate sarcophagus, wearing his episcopal robes, with a chalice as emblem of his priesthood. Another bishop reads prayers, while a young server hold a censer. In the background monks hold funeral tapers.

A fuller version of the quotation from Psalm sixteen is: “Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt Thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.”

Finally, you may like to look more closely at some of the decorative glass between the pictorial panels of this window or, if you have not already done so, look at the larger panel of St Patrick at the centre of the window.
